Step by step: how to layer the skincare products

” Should I use the oil serum before or after the moisturizer? In the case of serums, should the eye cream be the first step? And when should I exfoliate?”
We’re sure you’ve had similar (or the same) questions during your daily routine, so here is a step-by-step guide to layering your skincare products!

The first and most important rule of thumb may come as no surprise: since everybody’s skin and skin condition is different, there is no specific recipe for layering skincare products.

There is, however, a principle to follow: apply them from the lightest products to the heaviest ones, namely, start your routine with water-based products (like toners and serums) and finish with oily, creamy, richer-textured ones. This is necessary simply because oil-based products wouldn’t let the others absorb properly - which can reduce the effectiveness of your routine.

How many skincare products do you need?

It depends entirely on your skin type, skin condition and skin problem- and of course, on your personal preferences. If you have sensitive skin, it’s recommended to use fewer products on your face. But, for example, if you are working on anti-aging, don’t be embarrassed by the amount of products on your bathroom shelf.

If you don’t really have any problems and you just want to follow a basic routine, then use the cleanser- moisturizer- sunscreen trio.

What is the correct order of a skincare routine?

Step 1: cleansing
Actually, instead of step 1, it could be also called step 0. Whether you use it to cleanse your face in the morning/evening or to remove your makeup, a face cleanser should definitely be on your shelf. In the case of waterproof makeup or sunscreen, go for double cleansing!

Step 2: toning
Not mandatory, but definitely a super step: balances your skin’s pH, removes residual impurities of water and prepares skin for proper absorption of the active ingredients.

Step 3: serums
Serums are the most specific steps of a skincare routine, as we use them for exact purposes.  Hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide, etc. are all great, but make sure to go from lighter to heavier textures. For perfect absorption, apply them in small tapping motions.

Step 4: eye cream
It is also optional, but if you have bags and dark circles under your eyes, this step is recommended.

Step 5: moisturizing and face oils
If you don’t want anything special, finish your routine with your favorite moisturizer. But if you want to boost the moisturizing effect, apply a few drops of some kind of face oil – like our latest Squalane Booster Deep Nourishing Oil Serum, which provides non-stop nourishment & hydration to skin cells due to its antioxidant and vitamin content.

Step 6: sunscreen
Whether it’s a basic routine or you like when more is really more, always use sunscreen. Choose products with stable sun protection.

If you want more…

exfoliator/facial scrub → use once or twice a week – after cleansing and toning, but before applying serums
face mask → also use once or twice a week, after cleansing
lip care → use several times a day, especially if your lips are prone to dryness.
